Feeding neurodivergent kids can be challenging. While feeding any child can be difficult, neurodivergent kids may be more particular about what they wish to eat. Some neurodivergent children may also struggle with sitting still and completing their meals.

How to improve mealtime behavior?

Let us look at some tips that can make mealtime fun and a rewarding experience for kids:

  1. Set gentle rules during mealtime

When it is time to have meals, set rules. For instance, you can say, “When it is time to have meals, your mobile should go off.” This sets an expectation for mealtime. Ensure that the rules are followed.

  1. Meal time should be family time!

Eat meals together as a family. Children are likely to be more engaged and look less at the screens when their family is around.

  1. Provide support

Some children with neurodevelopmental disorders have poor body posture. In such cases, keep a pillow or rolled towels behind the child for support. A small stool can be kept in front of the chair if they do not reach the table.

  1. Introduce new foods gradually

Kids can be picky about food. Autistic kids, for instance, might have intense reactions to the strong smell, taste, or texture of food. In such cases, first, be patient and make them comfortable with the food. Familiarize them with the food by letting them touch and taste it. Praise them when required.

  1. Create a calm and comfortable atmosphere

Neurodivergent children might feel distracted or experience sensory overload if there is too much noise or clutter around. Clear the room and use their preferred cutlery so that they have a positive meal time.

  1. Reduce screentime slowly and gradually

If your child is used to screens while eating, avoid cutting them off abruptly. Slowly reduce screen use over time to avoid distress or meltdowns. Progress in small steps.

Let your child explore food

Meal times can get messy, but that is okay! Children learn about food by exploring and playing with it. This can help them get more comfortable with food. You can also involve them in cooking, so that they get more comfortable around foods with different textures, tastes, and smells.

What are the benefits of screen-free mealtime?

There are many benefits of screen-free meal time. Let us look at some:

  • Reduced risk of obesity: Children who watch their phones or TV screens during mealtime are more likely to overeat, leading to obesity. Less screen time equals less weight gain.

  • More mindful eating: Less screen time would mean fewer distractions. This would promote more mindful eating practices.

  • Improved digestion: Reduced screen time would mean children would focus more on food, which helps in better nutrient absorption.

  • More bonding: Since children are less focused on screens, there are increased chances of fostering connections.

Conclusion:

Having a good screen-free meal isn't about enforcing strict rules! It is about practicing mindful eating practices, being grateful for the food, and building a unique connection with the food. Ultimately, it is all about creating a safe and positive experience for the child.
