Every child has a unique journey towards their developmental milestone. Some children might be busy socializing with friends, while others may be quietly absorbed in a book. Every child grows at their own pace and has a unique path. But is there more to this journey? Let us explore the difference between healthy developmental signs and red flags that might warrant attention.

How can you differentiate between healthy behavioural signs and red flags?

Let us look at some common traits observed in children and how you can differentiate between healthy behavioral patterns and red flags based on those traits.

  • Lasting sadness or withdrawal: Children can get angry for a variety of reasons. Problems in school, not getting their favourite toy, or getting bruised while playing…the options can be endless. However, if your child is constantly sad and displays withdrawal from activities they once enjoyed, it might be time to rethink. Pay close eye to their social interactions, sleep schedules, appetite, and academics.

  • Does not understand social cues: Shyness can be normal and a part of both childhood and adulthood. However, if your child is too slow to understand social cues and struggles with socializing, then it might be time to evaluate. Avoiding eye contact repeatedly can be another factor.

  • Does not talk much: Some children might not be much of a talker. However, if your child does not babble by 12 months or has trouble forming words or sentences by age 2–3, it is better to show them to a pediatrician.

  • Fear: Being scared is fine, but anxiety or phobia can be a serious matter. Sit down and calmly talk to your child to understand the issue. Consulting a child psychologist for help can be more beneficial.

  • Struggles with school work: Learning disabilities (like dyslexia), disruptive behaviour, or difficulty concentrating can be another cause of concern. Early screening and assessment can help in such cases.

  • Aggressiveness/Irritability: Check whether your child is being too aggressive or irritable towards others or animals. It is important to seek out professional help in such cases.

Other motor/hearing changes to take note of:

  • Poor coordination of limbs.

  • They do not respond when their name is called.

  • Repetitive body movements like hand flapping, rocking back and forth, etc.

  • Intense reactions to light, sound, taste, smell, or texture.

There can be many other physical or behavioral symptoms. Make sure to consult a doctor if you suspect something.

When should you seek guidance?

Remember to trust your gut instincts. If you see subtle red flags, you can approach a pediatrician or child health specialist in your area. Early intervention can bring out better outcomes for growth and learning. Meanwhile, remain supportive and encourage your child.

In the end, if your child appears to be different from the rest, there is nothing to be worried about! It is important to recognize the subtle signs and guide them with patience and care. With the right support and encouragement, they can grow into the leaders and successful individuals of tomorrow!
